Chemistry Activity on Separation of Substances ??
Purpose & Fun Learning Goals ?
On June 14, 2024, our super enthusiastic grade 6 students at Vidhya Peetham i-School got hands-on with a super fun Chemistry Activity on the Separation of Substances! The goal was to dive into the world of churning, winnowing, filtration, sedimentation, and decantation. This exciting activity showed our young scientists the cool ways to separate different substances.
Separating Substances – How We Did It ?✨
Our students formed teams and were pumped to showcase their science skills! They brought their materials from home, with a promise to keep it eco-friendly. Each team picked a separation technique and got to work, transforming the classroom into a buzzing science lab!
Separation Techniques in Action ??
1. Churning: With curd and a churner, students turned their hands into butter-making machines!
2. Winnowing: Using grains and a winnowing basket, they showed how to blow away impurities like little pros.
3. Sieving: They sifted through wheat and rice flour to catch any unwanted particles.
4. Sedimentation and Decantation: Mixing sand and water, they demonstrated how sand settles and clear water can be poured off.
5. Filtration: Students filtered out unwanted bits from tea or juices with ease.
What We Learned ??
The students learned why separating substances is super important, how to get useful stuff out of mixtures, and the steps to clean up food items. This hands-on fun solidified their knowledge and made them appreciate these cool techniques even more.
