PreKG Children Create Sensory Lines with Natural Materials

Vidhya Peetham i-School   /   15 September 2026   /   2 minute read

On 15 September 2026, our PreKG children spent a session creating sensory lines with natural materials. The activity was part of their Life Skills work in Kindergarten, and it was simple and hands-on: the children used their fingers to place materials, piece by piece, along lines drawn on paper. The PreKG sensory lines activity gave the class a chance to learn through touch as well as sight.

Setting up the activity

A chart titled "Sensory Line Activity" was put up by the classroom window. It showed example lines made from small pieces laid end to end, including a red wavy line and a green spiral. Each child had a sheet of white paper with a line drawn on it. Some sheets had straight lines, others had wavy or zigzag lines, and some had circles. A woven basket of materials sat between the tables for the children to share.

Making PreKG sensory lines

The children took pieces from the basket and placed them along their lines. The pieces came in blue, yellow and green, and each child worked with one colour. The photos show the children concentrating as they followed the curves and corners of their lines, setting each piece down carefully. Some reached into the basket side by side, and several built long rows that stretched across the paper.

Why lines and textures

Following a line with small objects asks young children to look closely, coordinate hand and eye, and practise picking up and placing things with their fingers. Using natural materials also gives them different textures to feel. Activities like the PreKG sensory lines session are a gentle, practical way to build the hand control children will later use for drawing and writing.

It was a joyful, hands-on experience for the class, and the photos show plenty of smiles alongside the finished lines.
