Little Krishnas and Radhas Celebrate Janmashtami
On 3 September 2026, our Kindergarten and Primary pupils came together for a Janmashtami celebration at school. Children from Pre-KG to Grade 2 came dressed as little Krishnas and Radhas, and the older pupils from Grades 3 to 5 joined in to cheer them on.
Costumes, lamps and flowers
The campus was decorated for the occasion. Marigold garlands hung from the large tree in the courtyard, along with lengths of teal cloth and small hanging pots. Traditional brass lamps stood on a ledge decorated with kolam, beside plates of fruit and other offerings.
The children's costumes were full of colour. Many of the young Krishnas wore white or cream outfits with peacock feathers tucked into their headbands, and some carried flutes. The Radhas came in silk skirts, veils and festive jewellery, and several had henna on their palms. Older pupils also wore traditional clothes for the day, from kurtas to long skirts and half-sarees.
Dancing together
Dance was at the heart of the celebration. The younger children performed with confidence, clapping, swaying and moving together in the courtyard while others watched. The photographs show plenty of smiles, and one pair of little Krishnas sharing a flute between them.
The pupils from Grades 3 to 5 cheered on their younger schoolmates, which turned the day into a shared occasion for the Kindergarten and Primary sections.
There were quieter moments too. Groups of children stood with folded hands in front of the lamps and offerings, taking a pause in the middle of the festivities.
What the Janmashtami celebration was about
The day was not only about dressing up. During the Janmashtami celebration, the children learnt about the meaning of the festival, which marks the birth of Krishna. For our youngest pupils, a day like this is a gentle way to meet the stories and customs of an Indian festival, to take part in something together with their friends, and to build confidence by performing in front of others.
We hope families enjoy looking through the photographs from the day.
