Silambam Performance at Linga Bhairavi Temple for Navratri
Middle school students from Vidhya Peetham i-School presented a Silambam performance at Linga Bhairavi Temple on 19 October 2026. The performance was a special offering to Devi during Navratri. It was also a way for our students to celebrate Tamil Nadu's cultural heritage through a traditional art form.
The Silambam performance
Silambam is a traditional martial art of Tamil Nadu, practised with a staff and other implements. For this offering, the students performed in black outfits with red sashes on an open lawn lit by floodlights. Families and visitors sat on the grass around the performance area to watch.
The photographs from the evening show the range of routines the students presented. Some spun large star-shaped and circular frames in orange and bright colours. Others swung sticks trailing orange ribbons, held deep lunging stances with long spears, or twirled staffs with flames at both ends. A group of girls performed with ropes ending in weighted tassels, and two students demonstrated a sequence with crossed sticks.
Devotion, discipline and tradition
The school described the Silambam performance as one that reflected devotion, discipline and tradition. Routines like these ask students to keep their timing and spacing as a group and to handle their implements with care. The evening gave them a chance to share that work as part of the Navratri celebrations.
For the families who came to watch, it was an opportunity to see a part of Tamil Nadu's heritage carried forward by children. The performers also gathered on the lawn for a group photograph.
We thank the students for their effort, and the families who came along to watch and support them.
